This was the 2 nd snowiest winter in 26+ years for Seattle, WA and Salem, OR, and the 3 rd snowiest for Portland, OR and Pendleton, OR. This is incredible as we still have about 5 months to go in the water year.Įven the cities in the Pacific Northwest, where it's common to go an entire season with little to no snow, has gotten in on the frosty action. When looking at the northern Sierra water year (which runs from October 1 st to September 30 th), this water year has already broken the record for wettest on record (see chart below). Snow and rainfall was particularly heavy for the northern Sierras. This season featured an unusually stormy weather pattern with, at times, seemingly endless plumes of moisture off of the Pacific. Mammoth Mountain, CA may be called "mammoth" for reasons other than snowfall, but this year we'll give it the award for the 'Most Mammoth Amount of Snow' with almost 600'' of snow and counting. The West is still racking up snow totals but it's pretty safe to assume that parts of the Sierras and Cascades saw record snowfall this season. In Bismarck, this was the 6 th snowiest winter season in 26+ years, while Fargo, about 200 miles east of Bismarck, saw the 5 th least snow in 26+ years. While most of the region saw below average snowfall, there was a spot of above average snowfall in central and western North Dakota. For the season overall, snowfall was the 6th least in 26+ years for Chicago. In fact, Chicago saw about 68% of the season's total snowfall by the time Christmas rolled around, but less than an inch of snow fell between December 19 th and March 11 th. However, the months of February and January went by with nothing more than a couple of light snow showers. Snowfall by the end of December ran almost 10'' above average for that point in the season in Chicago. Largely, the region's snowfall was below average as snow was the 2 nd least in 26+ years for the region as a whole. If you love snow, then hopefully you didn't live in the Midwest this past winter. The Northeast region's "loser" in terms of snowfall was Baltimore, MD where this was the 3 rd least snowy winter in 26+ years with only 3'' of snow. Interestingly, last year was the least snowiest winter season on record. While the infamous mid-March Nor'easter brought 26% of the season's total snowfall to the city (that was almost 3' of snow), and the storm set a new record for the most snow in a 24 hour period as 31.3'' of snow fell between March 14 th and 15 th. Lake Effect snow during mid-November dumped roughly 21% of the season's total snowfall on Binghamton as about 2' of snow fell in a couple of days. The swath of above average snowfall was bounded by below average snowfall in places like Buffalo, NY and Toronto, ON while above average snowfall stretched from eastern New York state up into Newfoundland where they received incredible amounts of snow.īinghamton, NY is the winner in terms of snowfall for the Northeast Region as this was the snowiest winter season on record for the city. Generally speaking, above average snowfall was confined to New England (New York state and northeastward). Just 50 miles to our north, however, Wilkes-Barre, PA saw their 7th snowiest winter season in 26+ years. The dividing line is somewhere near weathertrends360 headquarters in Allentown, PA where snowfall was the 11 th least in 26+ years. Over a relatively small distance, snowfall for the season goes from above average to below average. On the whole, snowfall trended greater than last year for the Northeast but snowfall was still the 8 th least in 26+ years. And if you haven't heard, snowfall in the West was completely BONKERS! (not a scientific term). Below average snowfall was common across the Midwest, but snowfall was above average in the far northwestern Plains. Parts of New England saw one of their snowiest winters on record, but areas just to the south received below average snowfall. Depending on where you live, this winter season was feast or famine in terms of snowfall. ![]() ![]() ![]() Downy woodpeckers are also important indicators of the health of forests, as they are sensitive to changes in the forest and may be one of the first species to abandon an area if it becomes unhealthy. They play a role in controlling insect populations, as well as helping to spread the seeds of trees and other plants. One of the most important things to know about downy woodpeckers is that they are an important part of the forest ecosystem. They are adaptable birds and can survive in many different types of habitats as long as there are trees for them to forage in. During migration, downy woodpeckers can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, parks, and suburban areas. The downy woodpecker is known for its drumming sound, which it makes by tapping its beak against trees and other objects. This bird is easily recognizable by its black and white striped back, white belly, and distinctive red patch on the back of its head, which is found only on male birds. Most vegetable oils such as canola or soybean oils have cloud points between -10 oC and -20 oC, which is not considered truly low-temperature performance. Low temperature stability is measured by the cloud point of the oil, which is less than -40 oC for cold-weather oils. However, increases in viscosity at lower temperatures are somewhat problematic, with the added issue of possible crystallisation. Vegetable oils, being an ester, have higher Vis than either mineral oil or synthetic oils. The more constant viscosity-temperature profile of the synthetic oil is more desirable. These are two characteristics best avoided in a lubricating oil. Notice, though the massive increase in viscosity for the mineral oil at -20 oC, and the larger decrease in viscosity at 100 oC. Notice that Oil A, a mineral oil, and oil B, a synthetic PAO oil, have the same viscosity at 40 oC, and would therefore be sold as the same oil. Mineral oils have VIs below 100, PAO synthetic oils around 150, while high-oleic canola oil has a VI of 220. High performing suspension oils sometimes have Vis in the range 300-400. Most lubricants, food grade or not, are based on mineral or synthetic oils of specific viscositiesĪ viscosity index below 100 is considered low, while a VI higher than 200 is considered very high. You do not want your oil to seize at low temperatures but also not to lose all viscosity at higher temperatures. The key characteristic of a high VI oil is its ability to withstand decreases in viscosity as a function of increasing temperature. The viscosity index of an oil refers to the difference in viscosity between 40 oC and 100 oC. Polymerisation of this alpha-olefin results in the formation of synthetic oils of different viscosities and with added benefit of higher viscosity index than mineral oils. The most common monomer used in synthetic oil manufacture is alpha-olefin, a six-carbon primary alkene. Synthetic oils are usually of higher purity and offer thus a higher performance.
